INFORMATION MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE HAILS GOV. DICKSON ON STRIDES IN FREE EDUCATION; DISTRIBUTION OF EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

1 May

The Bayelsa Public Information Management Committee has given kudos to His Excellency, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State for giving a boost to the FREE EDUCATION PROGRAMME. The Chairman of the Committee Chief Boma Spero-Jack disclosed this while addressing stakeholders who visited him in his office to inquire about the activities of the Committee. Chief Spero-Jack assured stakeholders that the Committee will work with all interest groups to ensure the free flow of information in the State in an accurate and timely manner, adding that the Committee will work in synergy with other agencies saddled with the responsibility of managing information, including the general public.
The Chairman said he was elated that Governor Seriake Dickson is a pragmatic leader who matches his words with action, and this he has demonstrated in the area of human capacity development. Chief Spero-Jack recalled that in his inaugural address on the 14th February, 2012, Governor Dickson declared a State of emergency on education. The Governor said:
“In the course of our campaign, we promised massive investment in education, critical infrastructure, agriculture, health, as well as peace and security. The development of human capital is our most compelling and urgent need. That is why we promised you free and compulsory education for all our children in primary and secondary schools with emphasis on computer literacy, science and technology. I hereby announce with effect from today the take-off of free and compulsory education at primary and secondary school levels across Bayelsa State. The rebuilding of our educational infrastructure commences forthwith. Our curriculums will emphasis the study of Ijaw language, history and culture. We will invest in the development of other aspects of human capacity for our teeming youths, such that they will be able to unleash their creative capacities as well as enhance their drive for entrepreneurship”

Also speaking, the Secretary to the Committee, Comrade John Idumange, said all these promises made by the Governor Henry Seriake Dickson are being accomplished. Today, new schools have been established, existing schools are being renovated, courses in tertiary education are being expanded, entrepreneurshi p education is being promoted, scholarships are being awarded, educational materials including uniforms, books and bags are being distributed to students free of charge in furtherance of the free education policy in the State. The Governor has matched his words with actions, and this is the hall mark of a pragmatic leader, he reiterated. We are witnessing an educational revolution never before seen in the State and hopes that if the momentum is sustained, the State will soon leave the league of educational disadvantaged States in Nigeria, and export intermediate and high caliber manpower to other States, he remarked! I am indeed impressed with the development of educational infrastructure and the emphasis on training teachers in the State, Idumange said!
